The vision of FIRST is "To create a world where science and technology are celebrated... where young people dream of becoming science and technology heroes". Its mission is to design accessible, innovative programs that build not only science and technology skills and interests, but also self-confidence, leadership, and life skills. The First State FIRST Lego League (FLL) partners with FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, to bring to Delaware these programs, build self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills among K-12 students while motivating them to pursue careers in science, engineering, and technology. The ultimate goal of the program is to encourage and inspire our future workforce to appreciate the excitement and personal rewards of a career in science and technology. FIRST LEGO League and FIRST Tech Challenge are a hands-on working laboratories for students to experiment with what they learn in the classroom and to increase understanding of SMET fundamentals and the basics of engineering design (design, build, test). Discovering the interrelationships and universal uses of these concepts will help maintain motivation for learning more difficult and sometimes frustrating material. But, in order to encourage the students to put in the time and effort to learn these fundamentals, and to learn that science and technology are fun, there needs to be a goal. We use a state competition with the ultimate goal of winning and qualifying for a national tournament. This tournament has to be fun and exciting for the students and parents, and a source of pride for their schools and teachers.
