Summer 2020 Volunteer Opportunities in Minor Home Repair
MHDC is grateful to offer you an opportunity for individuals and groups to serve our home repair program in Kent County, DE. This is a partnership between Wesley UMC - Dover and Milford Housing Development Corporation (MHDC). Wesley hosts the teams in their beautiful Student Ministries Center (SMC). The SMC includes showers, laundry, and kitchen facilities as well as cots. Bring your own linens or sleeping bags. Groups of 5-25 people (ages 16 and up) may lodge there for a week for a nominal fee. Minors must be acccompanied by an adult. MHDC provides work sites, materials, and tools as well as supervision to ensure everyone has a safe and productive experience. No experience is necessary. MHDC will teach you all you need to know. The program serves low-income homeowners throughout Kent County, DE. Many of the homeowners are elderly, disabled, and/or veterans. Both the homeowners and the repairs will be pre-qualified by MHDC before your group arrives.

Reserve your week now before it fills up! Smaller groups may be asked to share the space to maximize service opportunities. Forms and deposits must be received from all members of your group before your dates are set. Week long opportunities begin Sunday - May 31 and end Saturday - July 25! Teams typically arrive Sunday evenings, and stay until Friday or Saturday. Your service is Monday through Friday usually between 8am and 4pm.
Many groups like to take advantage of Sunday and/or Saturday to see any of the many historic and cultural sites in Dover or to spend a day at the beach. The nearest beaches are Cape Henlopen State Park (44 miles south) and Rehoboth Beach (52 miles south). Rehoboth Beach also offers tax free outlet shopping and many restaurants. Other options include:

Killens Pond State Park (12 miles south) for people with campers and for day visitors. Killens Pond has a water park, hiking, and kyaking.

Dover Mall (3 miles) includes a movie theater, shopping, and restaurants.

Lums Pond (40 miles north) which includes an adventure ropes course, boating, fishing, and hiking.
