Description: Matter of Balance is a program based upon research conducted by the Roybal Center for Enhancement of Late-Life Function at Boston University. It is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase the activity levels of older adults who have concerns about falls. During 8 (two-hour) classes, participants learn to view falls and fear of falling as controllable, set realistic goals for increasing activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors and promote exercise to increase strength and balance. Who would benefit from participating in the A Matter of Balance sessions? Anyone who is concerned about falls, has sustained a fall in the past, restricts activities because of concerns about falling, is interested in improving flexibility, balance and strength and is age 60 or older, community dwelling and able to problem-solve. A Matter of Balance Coach Volunteer – Upon certification, volunteer will be responsible for implementing the A Matter of Balance sessions through the use of lesson plans, workbooks, group discussion and activities. Training Expectations: Attend eight hours of coach training and earn A Matter of Balance Certification. Attend 2.5 hours of facilitator training update annually. Agree to facilitate two Matter of Balance classes within one year of certification. Classroom Responsibilities: Two Coaches are required to teach the class to participants. New coaches will be paired with an experienced coach. Prepare for each class by reviewing the Matter of Balance manual and materials. Present the class according to the directions, training and materials provided. Encourage interactive discussion about the concepts and skills presented. Demonstrate and coach the exercises outlined in the Matter of Balance Program. Promote socialization and a solution-oriented environment among the participants. A Master Trainer will provide support and mentoring to each coach. Criteria for Leadership: Good communication and interpersonal skills, enthusiasm, dependability, willingness to lead a small group, interest in working with older adults, life experiences valued - with education or health care experience a plus, ability to perform range of motion and low-level endurance exercises, ability to carry up to 20 lbs. The Office of the Public Guardian, (OPG) operates the Guardianship Monitoring Program (GMP) for the Court of Chancery which is designed to monitor individuals who have been placed under guardianship and whose care is the responsibility of court-appointed guardians. These vulnerable individuals are adults over the age of eighteen that have been deemed incapacitated by the State of Delaware. A guardian is someone appointed by the court to make medical and/or financial decisions on behalf of these individuals. This important monitoring function enables the court to have first-hand information about people for whom the court has ultimate responsibility. As a volunteer for the GMP, you will be assigned a case, given necessary information about the case, visit with the ward and the guardian if necessary. After your visit, you will complete a report indicating the status of the person subject to guardianship and any other important information. Your report, once completed, should be checked for spelling, grammar and factual accuracy. Accuracy is important as your report will become part of official court record. Once reviewed, you will be then email your report to your contact at the OPG. The report will be viewed by the Guardianship Advocacy Director and then filed with the court. The wards of the Court of Chancery are very important and they deserve every right and protection we can provide them. As a volunteer you become the “eyes and ears” of the court and your participation in the Guardianship Monitoring Program is invaluable.

Description: The CareWear Project consists of many dedicated members who knit and crochet year-round beautifully crafted cold weather clothing and blankets for our county’s most neediest people. Whether it is a veteran who have valiantly served our country, newborns whose mothers are children themselves with few resources, the elderly afflicted with Alzheimer’s, the homeless, those suffering from the complications of aids, or others needing help, the members of CareWear have risen year after year to the challenge of making lives a little better and brighter. CareWear members meet monthly to turn in their completed items and pick up yarn. Completed items may include adult/children/toddler/baby – hats/scarves/mittens/gloves/booties/sweaters – lap robes/blankets/afghans (M-XL) & chemo caps. Items are then sorted and stored awaiting the yearly distribution which takes place on the last Friday of October and coincides with Make a Difference Day. Knitter / Crocheter – will volunteer to make knitted or crochet items for those in need according to program guidelines/requests CareWear Support – assist staff in the coordination of program meetings, organizing of inventory in preparation for annual distribution and/or entering hours into an electronic database. Fish of Northern Delaware is an organization made up of volunteers who dedicate their time to assist those 60 years of age and older, to make their medical appointments by providing them with reliable transportation. Board Member/Treasurer – In the capacity of a board member, the volunteer will advise and support the agency in forming local policy, planning, and developing operational procedures and practices consistent with the agency's mission and goals. Volunteer will help solicit community support for the agency and promote the mobilization of financial and in-kind resources. Volunteer will serve on various support committees as needed to help develop, plan and implement agency activities and special events. In the capacity of a treasurer, the volunteer will be responsible for keeping records of expenditures/receipts and for writing checks for FISH of Northern Delaware. Medical Appointment Driver – Volunteer provides rides for people 60 years of age and older who do not have reliable transportation get to their medical appointments. Volunteer must use their personal vehicle and pay for their own gas Volunteer must be able to commit to be a driver for a couple of days per month Although volunteer will make their own schedule, volunteer will need to be available during operating hours of 8am-4pm; Monday – Thursday. Transportation Assistant – Volunteer handles the scheduling of client appointments to various facilities such as doctor’s dentist or pharmacy. Will coordinate schedules for van drivers and must be able to keep good records. Must have good customer skills, be kind and patient with our clients. Must have own phone and computer. The Newark Area Welfare Committee is in need of Food Cupboard Hosts to distribute food to neighbors in need. The food cupboard is located at Newark United Methodist Church, 69 East Main St, Newark Delaware. Free parking is available in the church parking lot. The cupboard is open from 2 to 3 pm on weekdays. The Long Term Care Ombudsman advocates for residents who live in long-term care facilities as well as those who live in other settings (such as their own homes) and receive home and community-based services. The Ombudsman program investigates and resolves complaints on behalf of these individuals.Complaints can be made by residents, family members, or other concerned parties. The program also provides opportunities for Volunteer Ombudsmen to serve as friendly visitors/advocates in nursing homes.

Become a Nanticoke Creekwatcher and help the Nanticoke Watershed Alliance and partner agencies track the health of one of the healthiest Chesapeake rivers and its creeks. As a citizen scientist, you'll learn how to use awesome water quality monitoring equipment and will follow an EPA-approved protocol that allows our data to be used for policy and management decisions. The NWA provides all equipment and extensive training and on-going support. No previous experience is necessary; Creekwatchers must have the physical ability to walk and to carry and use equipment and must be able to follow protocol. All sites are accessible by foot. (You don't need to own or to use a boat when Creekwatching.) Minors aged 13 and older are welcome to join the team, when accompanied by a parent or guardian. Please note--this program is based in western Sussex County and in Maryland's Lower Eastern Shore. The program currently monitors 35 sites through the Nanticoke region in both Delaware and in Maryland. Sites are long-term, pre-selected locations. Sites vary from bridge crossings to private docks to boat ramps. Creekwatchers make observations about their sites, collect up to three water samples that we transport to partner labs, and take a suite of measurements directly in the water. Beyond being used by agencies for Clean Water Act reports and to track the progress of pollution-reduction strategies, the NWA also uses Creekwatchers data to create an annual water quality report card. Saint Francis Friends Mature, empathetic Saint Francis Friends volunteers make friendly phone calls to patients in their homes who may be lonely or just need someone to talk with. Volunteers converse — they discuss current events, families, friends and life experiences — and help to brighten patients' days. If any medical or pastoral needs arise, Saint Francis Friends connect patients with their nurse navigator/physician office or a chaplain/local religious facility. Saint Francis Friends receive specialized training. A background in healthcare or pastoral care may be helpful but is not a requirement. Volunteers are needed weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., and the schedule is flexible. All volunteers must complete the volunteer screening process, which consists of an interview, drug and TB testing at Saint Francis Hospital, background screenings, and attendance at a hospital volunteer orientation. Qualifications: Dependable, detail oriented, desire to support our mission, pleasant manner, knowledge of computers and experience using Microsoft Office. Support: Training for this position will be provided Age Requirement: Must be at least 18 years of age Spend time at Easter Seals doing what you love - whether that is a craft, playing an instrument, cooking, dancing or singing. Our participants love meeting and learning from new people. Both individuals and groups are welcome. We are specifically looking for someone to paint fingernails in our Georgetown Adult Day Program. Do you love to drive? Have some time and care to share with others? Van Driver Volunteers help to keep families close when the comfort of family is needed most. Van Driver volunteers help to drive families to visit their children in the hospital, on errands, and to enjoy local attractions during their stay. The Van Driver opportunity is a trained position and volunteers must be 21 years and older to participate. Van Drivers are trained to operate our three House vans, and will never be asked to transport families in their own personal vehicle. Interested applicants must possess a valid driver's license. Applicants will also be asked to submit a criminal background check & MVR at no cost to them. Van Driver Volunteers are covered under RMHDE's insurance when operating House vehicles. The House operates four scheduled volunteer shifts daily: 9-12, 12-3, 3-6, & 6-9. Van Drivers may volunteer in weekly or bi-weekly shifts. We ask reoccurring volunteers be able to make a commitment of at least 2 per month for 6 months. We are in particular need of Van Drivers on weekday evenings and weekends. Love nature and meeting new people? Each week, DuPont Environmental Education Center (DEEC) sees hundreds of people of all ages visiting the Wilmington Riverfront. We need your help sharing the wonders of the outdoors and making them feel welcome though this Visitor Center Greeter volunteer position! General Description The primary role of this position is to ensure a positive experience for visitors to the center and present Delaware Nature Society (DelNature) in a positive way to the community. The position performs visitor experience tasks including: greeting visitors interpreting environmental and cultural history answering phones assisting with visitor programs The DEEC Visitor Center Greeter volunteer position promotes DelNature’s mission of improving our environment through education, advocacy, and conservation. The person in this position does this by building strong relationships with the communities we serve leading to increased membership, volunteerism, advocacy, program participation and financial support. Training provided. Responsibilities Face-to-face Activities Greet visitors and answers inquiries Provide guidance on recreation opportunities and points of interest on site and in the area Interpret environmental and cultural history for adults, children, and families Assist with drop-in visitor activities During lulls in visitation, assist site staff with preparation of programs and projects Actively introduce visitors to membership and program opportunities Time Allocated: 80% Telephone Activities Answer telephone calls and direct inquiries to appropriate staff members Answer queries associated with public programs, memberships, public group programs, summer camps as well as any other calls Take registrations for programs and sell merchandise Time Allocated: 20% Minimum Qualifications Comfort and willingness to interact and speak with the public spanning wide range of community audiences Basic computer skills Natural science or environmental science knowledge a plus, but not required. Volunteers are the heart of the hospice team. We depend on our hospice volunteers to help us provide the extra love and care our patients and their families need at this time in their lives. Volunteers offer support, companionship and practical, compassionate help to this special group of people. Whether it is running errands, staying with the patient so family members can take a break, reading to a patient or holding their hand, the help and support our volunteers give is returned to them in countless ways. We are actively seeking volunteers throughout all of New Castle and Kent Counties to donate time as Friendly Visitors to our patients. Our patients are located throughout both counties in a variety of settings and locations.

Hundreds of Delaware youth need caring, adult role models. A Mentor is someone who, along with parents, provides a younger person with support, counsel, friendship, reinforcement, and a constructive example. Mentors are good listeners. They are people who care and who want to help youngsters bring out strengths that already exist. The focus of the relationship is on the child and his/her thoughts, feelings, and dreams. This develops the child’s sense of importance, self-esteem, and competence. A good Mentor plays multiple roles in the life of a child. Mentors are supportive friends, role models, confidants, advocates, and much more. A positive trusting relationship with an adult can indeed be the turning point in a child’s life. Mentor – Volunteers are needed to work with individual children from single parent families, helping them with school work, providing support and motivation and helping them with any issues that may arise.
