Mature, empathetic Saint Francis Friends volunteers make friendly phone calls to patients in their homes who may be lonely or just need someone to talk with. Volunteers converse — they discuss current events, families, friends and life experiences — and help to brighten patients' days. If any medical or pastoral needs arise, Saint Francis Friends connect patients with their nurse navigator/physician office or a chaplain/local religious facility. Saint Francis Friends receive specialized training. A background in healthcare or pastoral care may be helpful but is not a requirement. Volunteers are needed weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., and the schedule is flexible.
All volunteers must complete the volunteer screening process, which consists of an interview, drug and TB testing at Saint Francis Hospital, background screenings, and attendance at a hospital volunteer orientation.
