Opportunity Details

Read Aloud Delaware

VOLUNTEER READERS.  Volunteers are needed to read to preschoolers.  Volunteers commit to 1-2 hours per week to read to one child at a time in various childcare, Head Start, and kindergarten centers in New Castle County.  Read Aloud Delaware has partnerships with 38 reading placement sites.  Volunteers must complete an online application available at www.ReadAloudDelaware.org/volunteer.  Volunteers must provide two references, complete a fingerprinted criminal background check, and attend a 90-minute training session.

PARENT EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM (PEP) PRESENTERS.  Retired teachers are especially needed for this volunteer role.  PEP presenters deliver information, ideas for free, or low-cost, activities that parents can use to help their children learn to speak well, get ready to read and get ready to write.  Each session lasts approximately 60 minutes.  Sessions take place at the childcare centers we serve and may be scheduled for daytime or early evening (5:30-6:30 pm).  An information session for this project will be held at the new Barnes & Noble bookstore on Concord Pike in September; the date is to be arranged.

MOTHER GOOSE/FATHER GOOSE.  Animated, outgoing volunteers are needed to bring nursery rhymes to life in preschool classrooms all over New Castle County.  These volunteers wear a costume consisting of an apron or a long vest with lots of little pockets.  Inside each pocket is a small toy that represents a classic nursery rhyme.  Children get to pick a pocket and learn a nursery rhyme.  There is plenty of room for innovation and self-expression.  You get to pick the rhymes you will teach and you get to assemble the toys that represent the rhymes.  If you would like to volunteer for this assignment, please contact Mary Hirschbiel at 656-5256 in the Read Aloud Delaware office.
