Opportunity Details

United Way of Delaware

Your help is needed! The United Way of Delaware is participating in a Poverty Simulation on August 21 at Delcastle High School. The poverty simulation experience is designed to help participants begin to understand what it might be like to live in a typical low-income family trying to survive from month to month. It is a simulation, not a game. The object is to sensitize participants to the realities faced by low-income people. In the simulation, participants assume the roles of different families facing poverty. The simulation is conducted in a large room with the “families” seated in groups in the center. Around the perimeter are tables representing community resources and services for the families.

Volunteers will assume these roles of community resources and services around the room. Your role as a volunteer could that of a police officer, utility collector, pawnbroker, grocer, mortgage/rent collector, quick cash/payday & title loan manager, two DFS caseworkers, a DFS receptionist, community action worker, employer, worker, school teacher. In anticipation of the simulation we will be providing training for all volunteers participating that day. Training will take place on August 6 at 11AM at the United Way building on 625 N. Orange Street in Wilmington. It will take place in the boardroom from 11-12 noon. On August 6 volunteers will be given general instructions on how you will function in your role. This will prepare you for the simulation on August 21. Two simulations will take place that day.
