Habitat for Humanity Volunteer
Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County
Established in 1986, Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County has served 300 families and ranks among the top three HFH Northeast affiliates (of 210 affiliates from Delaware to Maine) in terms of housing production.
Habitat is consistently humbled and inspired by the personal impact we have on homeowners. We see homeowners return to school, develop new confidence and secure better jobs. We learn of improvement in their children’s school performance and about homeowners’ children who want homeownership for themselves. We see families long robbed of hope believing again in themselves, in others, and in the future. Habitat helps short circuit the cycle of poverty for many of our families.
All of our accomplishments would NOT be possible without the help of all of our volunteers. From those in the main office and construction site to those in our ReStores.
- Clerical – assist with light administrative and office duties
- Construction Site Crew Leader/ Volunteer – commit to coming out from one to three days a week and helping with general construction work on building sites. This work may involve carpentry, electrical, plumbing, drywall, painting, and landscaping.
- Family Support Volunteer – Volunteers work with partner families to encourage and support them as they go through the homeownership program.
- Special Events Support
Habitat receives generous amounts of donated materials every year (24 tons in 2005) but, the majority of it cannot be used in the homes. Habitat sells these donations at a discounted rate in the Habitat ReStore, a resale shop that helps Habitat raise additional dollars to build houses.
Habitat ReStore Volunteer – Assist the Habitat ReStore team with donation pick up, creatively display items in store, organize and price merchandise on the sales floor, greet customer, assist customers as they navigate the store and during checkout, assist customers purchasing construction materials, furniture, and used appliances. Shifts include: 10AM – 2PM; 12PM – 4PM; 10AM – 4PM.
