Neighborhood Foot Care Patrol
The Neighborhood Foot Care Patrol is an initiative of Nurses & Neighbors to provide foot screenings at homeless shelters, mobile health units, and senior centers. Our other initiatives on health and mobility are the Nursing-Transportation Partnership and the Delaware Health & Mobility Alliance.
For the homeless population, their feet may be the only mode of transportation to get food, to go to work, and so on. This is especially true in Sussex County, Delaware where public transit is limited. Our experience working with the homeless, elderly and disabled reinforces the need to do something. Numerous studies have shown that preventive care and routine screening of the feet can prevent injuries. infection, and complicated and expensive treatments. Foot care and screening can even save toes and limbs from amputation. Elderly with limited income especially those with poor vision, mobility issues, diabetes, lymphedema, and neuropathy often skip routine screening. The homeless are often in wet shoes and socks and suffer from immersion foot and skin breakdown
We are seeking 10 volunteers to join the inaugural Neighborhood Foot Care Patrol. All must meet background clearance, complete training, meet physical requirement, and complete a volunteer liability waiver. Experience working with vulnerable populations in clinical/community settings preferred.
Thank you to the Highmark Delaware BluePrints for the Community grants, Nurses & Neighbors will provide training, volunteer insurance, background checks, scrubs, PPE, and supplies for free. Each patrol member must commit to screening at least 20 people in one calendar year.
