Neighborhood Foot Care Patrol
The Neighborhood Foot Care Patrol is an initiative of Nurses & Neighbors to provide foot screenings and foot care education at homeless shelters, mobile health units, and senior centers. Numerous studies have shown that preventive care and routine screening of the feet can prevent injuries. infection, and complicated and expensive treatments. Foot care and screening can improve quality of life and promotes health and mobility.
Each patrol member must agree to:
Register through Volunteer Delaware.
Complete a criminal background check (cost covered by Nurses & Neighbors)
Required Training
Complete Neighborhood Foot Care Patrol training.
Complete HIPAA and confidentiality training.
Review and agree to the Code of Conduct and Ethics.
Service Expectations
Screen at least 20 individuals within one calendar year.
Be physically able to bend and work on feet while screening recipient is seated.
Some foot screenings may be held outdoors.
Provide one-week notice before withdrawing, unless due to emergency.
Notify in advance when ill or unable to attend scheduled events.
Support Provided by Nurses & Neighbors
We will provide the following at no cost to the volunteer:
Background check
Volunteer liability insurance
Training and continuing education
Scrubs and PPE
Foot care supplies and education materials
Coordination and scheduling of community screenings
$100 subsidy toward malpractice insurance
$100 subsidy toward Foot Care Nurse certification (for eligible RNs)
Training for the inaugural 10-member-volunteer cohort will start in September, 2025.
