Volunteer Advocate

VOLUNTEER/INTERN ADVOCATE

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Located in New Castle / Kent / Sussex County Courthouse 

Advocates provide a number of services for victims of domestic violence, including, but not limited to: 

  • 1. Moral support for victims in crisis (not any advice, including legal) 

  • 2. Information about the court process 

  • 3. Help in understanding the dynamics of domestic violence 

  • 4. A supportive presence in Family Court hearings 

  • 5. Assistance in exploring available options 

  • 6. Referrals to community services 

  • 7. Advocates are expected to work a minimum of one four-hour shift per week in our office.  

  • 8. Advocates are required to attend Continuing Training Sessions 

PROGRAM MISSION 

The mission of the Domestic Violence Advocacy Program is to provide information and support to victims of domestic violence through trained volunteers/staff.  

PROGRAM GOALS: 

  • 1. Provide information and resources to victims of domestic violence 

  • 2. Provide support to victims as they navigate the Family Court process 

  • 3. Monitor cases of domestic violence until the case is resolved 

  • 4. Help empower victims of domestic violence to take charge of their lives 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES – Volunteer advocates must: 

  • 1. Keep adequate written records of their work 

  • 2. Attend continuing training sessions 

  • 3. Consult regularly with the program Coordinator to review ongoing client matters 

  • 4. Participate in evaluation of job performance 

REQUIRED SKILLS / ABILITIES – Volunteer advocates must be able to: 

  • 1. Keep all client and court information confidential 

  • 2. Gather and accurately record factual information 

  • 3. Communicate effectively, both written and orally 

  • 4. Respect and relate to people from diverse backgrounds 

  • 5. Deal with hostility, anger and other negative emotions 

  • 6. Maintain objectivity 

  • 7. Be non-judgmental 

  • 8. Submit to a criminal background check 

  • 9. Become trained in HIPAA regulations
